Momentum

It’s not easy to change. In our BIFJ entry for this week we talk about action vs inaction and in that post, I talk about the value of small changes. I also talk about the need to act on the knowledge we have.

So here let’s talk about the idea of momentum. That we use these small steps to create a change that will last.

Change is incredibly difficult, not just because we often have to stave off the ideas that we aren’t moving fast enough but because change, real change, means we have to change.

As in who we are.

We have to change a piece of our own identity.

So no wonder so many of our attempts to change don’t work. We keep trying to change the wrong thing.

We have to choose to be a new version of ourselves. We have to see ourselves as more than who we are now.

Here’s a good exercise:

Visualize who you want to be.

For real.

You don’t have to tell anyone but write this all down.

Who do you want to be?

An athlete? Someone who inspires? Someone who aspires to be something more?

Now keeping that in mind, we have to choose.

We repeat to ourselves, “ I am an athlete.”

Any time we are faced with a decision we have to think, “What would an athlete do?”

Of course, this is a very basic beginning and we have to keep in mind that there are more important things. Family. Friends. Our own mental health. But this is a good start.

This will help you to build momentum and more importantly give you something to hold on to in the dark times.

One day, I hope I’ll hear from you, I hope I’ll have a chance to know what you accomplish now that you’ve set your mind to it.
